About this book
Poppies, birdsong and gunfire meet in John McCrae's title poem, where fallen soldiers speak to those still living. This collection places that appeal beside verse about battle, bereavement, ships and remembered places. In "Isandlwana," a mother's voice connects a soldier's grave in Zululand with Brecon Town. "The Captain" turns a weathered ship into a reminder of Nelson's fighting at Cape St. Vincent, while the contents also include songs of comfort and poems with religious themes.
Andrew Macphail's accompanying character essay brings the poet into the hospital ward and the daily routines of a physician. His recollections describe McCrae's youthful appearance, laughter and changing temper, then record the strain visible after service at the front. Read together, the poems and personal account offer a way to examine how public language about duty sits beside the private cost of war.
