About this book
Legends of the Patriarchs and Prophets, and Other Old Testament Characters from Various Sources, is by the Rev. S. Baring-Gould, M.A., author of Curious Myths of the Middle Ages. The title page is dated 1881. In his preface he writes that an incredible number of legends exist about the people of the Old Testament, that his collection is by no means exhaustive, and that the Mussulman traditions are nearly all derived from the Talmudic writers.
One passage on Adam gathers the origins that different peoples attribute to man, among them the Peruvians, the North American Indians, the Egyptian philosophers, the Chinese and the Chaldeans. Another says that Lamech ordered his son Noah to carry the body of Adam to the centre of the earth, which is Salem, later called Jerusalem, and names Shem or Melchizedek as its keeper, while a Christian tradition places Adam's burial on Golgotha.
