Prudy asks to keep house and cook dinners without asking Mrs. Fixfax, declaring that she can make cake, pie, biscuit, and three kinds of pudding. Dotty insists on a shared say in the arrangements and claims to be able to make gingerbread just as well as the person she addresses. Horace asks that the girls be allowed to manage, predicting queer messes but saying that the experiment will be good fun.
Mrs. Pragoffyetski laughs at a child's report that Dotty wanted the child to have measles and expresses approval that the child refused. Prudy remarks that the day seems like Sunday, except for the boys blowing tin trumpets.
