About this book
McGuffey's Second Eclectic Reader, Revised Edition, is by William Holmes McGuffey. Its table of contents lists lessons such as The Song of the Bee, The Torn Doll, Sheep-shearing, The Tiger, Willie and Bounce, The Kitchen Clock, The Fox and the Ducks and Bessie. Sections on articulation and punctuation, with suggestions to teachers, follow the list of lessons.
In one lesson a man who has been going about with a bear waits for his supper while the bear is tied up in the yard. The bear climbs the stairs to an attic where three children are playing, and the youngest boy climbs on its back for a game of hide and seek. In Lesson LXVIII, Bessie asks her Aunt Annie if she may make a garden of wild flowers on the shady hillside across the brook, and her aunt says a basket will be better than an apron.
