The executive tells Dano Marin that last night he said there was nothing dangerous, and asks whether he still thinks so. The text says that as the only scientist in a crew of rough-and-ready colonists and builders, Marin was going to be called on to answer a lot of questions that weren't in his field. A passage describes the shock of awakening with no clothing on and not knowing who or what had removed it during the night. The biologist examines rats and notes a wide variation in size, organs whose proportions varied greatly, more than is normal, and teeth that were not uniform.
