About this book

Greta finds both work and comfort in the dressing room of a repertory theatre, mending costumes while trying to steady a mind troubled by memory loss and fear of open spaces. On a night advertised for Macbeth, she discovers that Iris Nefer is preparing to appear as Queen Elizabeth. Sidney Lessingham explains the mismatch as a theatrical experiment, but Greta keeps noticing details that disturb her sense of where, and when, the company belongs.

Fritz Leiber's 1963 science fiction story combines time travel with the practical business of putting on a play. Makeup, prompt copies, patched clothes and arguments over Shakespeare give its unusual premise a concrete backstage setting. Greta's narration moves between affectionate observations of the actors and uneasy efforts to interpret what she sees. A later performance, with Martin taking Lady Macbeth's part, makes acting itself part of the uncertainty. Readers interested in theatre and speculative fiction will find the changing boundary between a performance and its audience central to the story.

About the author

Fritz Leiber

Fritz Leiber (1910-1992) was an American author who moved fluidly among science fiction, fantasy, and horror. He created the roguish duo Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser and coined the term sword and sorcery, while his modern supernatural tales helped shape urban horror. He won multiple Hugo and Nebula awards.
