About this book
Spider habits become the machinery of a miniature fairy conflict in Henry C. McCook's 1895 story for young people. His preface explains that Pixies represent spiders, while Brownies stand for insect forms, especially those useful to people. Human characters connect this small world with life around an old farm. Water spiders supply ideas for sailors and ships, burrowing spiders for underground dwellings, and airborne spiders for scouting.
The story gives these natural patterns human feelings and military roles. During a lake battle, Rodney and Ask face danger aboard ship, and Sergeant Clearview helps rescue Rodney at the ship's rail. An appendix links incidents to the habits behind them, with figures providing further clues. The combination offers readers a way to follow an adventure while considering the animal behavior that shaped it, though the fighting includes serious injuries.
