Practical Exercises in English is by Huber Gray Buehler. The book is arranged for use with Adams Sherman Hill's Foundations of Rhetoric. The preface says the art of using one's native tongue correctly and forcibly is acquired for the most part through imitation and practice.

A section headed No one Book or Writer Decisive says good use is decided by the prevailing usage of the writers whose works make up permanent English literature, not by their inadvertencies. The text says that very often, instead of the simple subjunctive forms, we use auxiliary verbs. A list of entries includes word pairs marked as distinguished, among them council and counsel, custom and habit, and deception and deceit.
