The Branding Needle; or, The Monastery of Charolles, is one of the works listed in the series History of a Proletarian Family Across the Ages by Eugène Sue. The series list names, among others, The Gold Sickle; or, Hena the Virgin of the Isle of Sen, The Brass Bell; or, The Chariot of Death and The Iron Collar; or, Faustine and Syomara. Dame Odille tells the eternal gigglers that the days are short at this season and that the community expects the signal before sunset.
A handsome lassie of sixteen years with blue eyes and black hair answers dame Odille that a few more armfuls of dry wood are needed, and that she will take charge of lighting the pyre. The speaker addressed as grandmother says that Sigebert will henceforth inhabit his own royal mansion, with his own servants and his separate room. The Master of the Hounds, smiling, as well as Ronan, tells a good father that the only thing spoiled was the archdeacon's hide.
