About this book
Psycho-Cybernetics is a self-improvement book by Maxwell Maltz, a plastic surgeon, first published in 1960. Maltz noticed that patients whose faces were changed by surgery did not always change the way they saw themselves, and he built his argument around the self-image: the picture a person holds of themselves, which he says steers behaviour like a guidance system.
He describes mental exercises, including visualisation and relaxation, meant to replace a negative self-image with a more positive one. The title borrows the word cybernetics, the study of goal-seeking control systems.
