About this book
Rue is by Laurence Housman and carries the line “You may wear your rue with a difference.” The contents list lines such as “Never shall life clear utterance show” and “What know ye of the wounds of Christ”.
One poem asks the reader to hark back three thousand years and know how tongues had labour then, when God, who gathers north and south to marvel at His ways, opened of old the ass’s mouth and filled it to His praise. A poem called An Empty Hermitage says that a sad deserted place speaks of an old despair, its weary stone hollowed out with prayer. A poem has its speaker say that Love hangs to die against the speaker's flesh as on the accursèd tree.
