About this book
The Burgomaster of Stilemonde is a play in three acts by Maurice Maeterlinck, translated by Alexander Teixeira de Mattos. The scene is laid at the end of August, 1914, at Stilemonde, a small town in Belgian Flanders. The cast includes Cyrille van Belle, Burgomaster of Stilemonde, his daughter Isabelle, his son Floris, and Lieutenant Otto Hilmer, the Burgomaster’s son-in-law.
A man named Jean Gilson answers a question about Winkel with Yes, three or four hundred, and says he was told that the master’s son-in-law was at the head of them. The Burgomaster says to get them to come to the palm-house, saying there is some urgent work to be done because of the damage last night, and Claus answers that he will speak to them. The Burgomaster says that he is dying ten deaths, rather than one, and Isabelle falls sobbing into her father’s arms.
