The title page reads Songs from Books by Rudyard Kipling. A preface signed Rudyard Kipling says that practically all the verses and chapter-headings scattered through the books are collected in the volume, and that where only a few lines of verse were originally used, the song is given in full.

A song headed Cities and Thrones and Powers says that cities, thrones and powers stand in Time's eye almost as long as flowers, which daily die. A piece headed The Children's Song pledges love and toil to the Land of our Birth in the years to be. A list of lines includes If you can keep your head when all about you and I keep six honest serving-men. One poem has lines ending in my lord, among them "You war against the sunset glow, The judgment follows fast, my lord."
