About this book

The Walrus Hunters carries the subtitle A Romance of the Realms of Ice and is by R. M. Ballantyne. A river in America flows to the north-westward of Great Bear Lake and helps to drain that part of the great wilderness into the Arctic Sea. The name Greygoose River was given by the Dogrib Indians, who dwelt in its neighbourhood and were wont every spring and autumn to descend its waters nearly to the sea in quest of game.

A middle-aged woman sits down beside the man and tells Mangivik he is not pleased to-day. Asked whether he is hungry, the man answers that he has just picked a walrus rib clean. A man puts the sledge outside to make room and calls all the dogs in, resolving that the poor things should not be exposed to the pitiless storm.
