About this book

Stories from the Iliad is subtitled Or, The siege of Troy, and its chapters include The Council and The Message to Achilles, among others. In the chapter headed The Council, Zeus, king of the gods, lies wakeful, pondering in his heart how best he might do honour to Achilles. Zeus resolves to send a Dream to beguile Agamemnon, and tells the Dream to bid him call his warriors to arms with speed, for now he shall take the strong city of Troy.

When Odysseus met a common man hasting to the ships, he smote him with his sceptre and told him to sit still and listen to the words of his betters. Thersites, described as bandy-legged, round-shouldered, lame of one foot, and most ill-favoured of all men in the host, would not hold his peace and shrilly poured his upbraidings upon Agamemnon. A thousand fires burned in the plain before Troy, and fifty men sat in the red glow of each blazing fire. Agamemnon, called angry, answers Achilles by asking whether he seeks to cheat him and would rob him of his prize and give him naught instead.
