About this book
The contents name stories including The Twisting of the Rope, Red Hanrahan’s Curse, Hanrahan’s Vision and The Death of Hanrahan. The writer thanks Lady Gregory, who helped to rewrite the stories in the beautiful country speech of Kiltartan.
Hanrahan, the hedge schoolmaster, a tall, strong, red-haired young man, comes into a barn where some of the men of the village are sitting on Samhain Eve. Hanrahan rises from the bench he had sat down on and says that there is a full moon, and that if he gets as far as Gilchreist to-night, he will reach to her before the setting of the sun to-morrow. A man whose eyes grew misty as if he was looking at some far thing says that he is thinking of Ireland and the weight of grief that is on her. A man growing weaker knows there are some greater than himself in the room with him, and sometimes hears voices, very faint and joyful, crying from the rafters or out of the flame on the hearth.
