About this book
Bracebridge Hall, or The Humorists, is by Washington Irving. The contents list chapters named The Busy Man, Family Servants, The Widow, The Lovers, Bachelors, Wives, Story Telling, The Stout Gentleman and Forest Trees. The text describes an orphan niece, a pretty, soft-hearted baggage, named Phoebe Wilkins, who has been transplanted to the Hall within a year or two.
The text says the old housekeeper has the reputation, among the servants and the villagers, of being passing rich. The text says it is absurd, in a country like England, where there is so much freedom, and such a jealousy of right, for any man to assume an aristocratical tone, and to talk superciliously of the common people. A character named Dolph, whose mind was too full to take particular note of the objects around him, compares the free, open-hearted cheeriness of an establishment with the starveling, sordid, joyless housekeeping at Doctor Knipperhausen’s.
