About this book
The Last Vendée, whose subtitle reads The She-Wolves of Machecoul, is credited to Alexandre Dumas. The contents list names chapters called A Litter of Wolves, The Wounded Hare and Monsieur Michel.
Mary and Bertha find a library in a castle, with a thousand volumes, or something near that number; Mary prefers novels and Bertha history. The text says that the result of such desultory reading was that the two young girls grew up with many false notions about real life. In a talk between Jean Oullier and Courtin, a singular proposal is made, and the conversation includes the claim "I know more than any man about the life of Baron Michel." Michel says to Mary, "you are my heart, my soul, my life."
