About this book

The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans is a book by Arthur Conan Doyle. A dense yellow fog settles down upon London in the third week of November, in the year 1895. Holmes spent the first day cross-indexing his huge book of references, and the music of the Middle Ages is a subject he had recently made his hobby.

Holmes says that brother Mycroft is coming round and hands over a telegram reading Must see you over Cadogan West, Coming at once. Holmes says Mycroft draws four hundred and fifty pounds a year, remains a subordinate, has no ambitions of any kind, will receive neither honour nor title, but remains the most indispensable man in the country. Mr. Sidney Johnson, the senior clerk, meets them at the office and says the place is disorganised: the chief dead, Cadogan West dead, their papers stolen. A speaker says Oberstein had a short life-preserver and that, as West forced his way after them into the house, Oberstein struck him on the head with a fatal blow.
