About this book

Malcolm Hay is twenty-two, holds a science degree and speaks Russian, which is enough to win him a post at the Ukraine Oil Company's wells in southern Russia. His new chairman warns him that the Russian peasant is the hardest man in the world to read, and that the one name worth knowing is Israel Kensky. In a shabby Maida Vale boarding-house the old bookbinder is already at work on the design for a strange volume with steel covers, which he calls the Book of All-Power, while his daughter Sophia mocks him.

Edgar Wallace carries the story from London into Russia, where Hay crosses paths with the Grand Duchess Irene Yaroslav and her father, her servant Boolba, an outspoken American named Cherry Bim and the commissaries of the new Soviet order. Before long word spreads that Hay holds the book, and that knowledge puts him in danger.

First published in 1921, this is a brisk thriller of secrets, prisons, monasteries and divided loyalties, best for readers who like their adventure fast and their settings far from home.
