About this book
The Bravo of Venice, A Romance, is by Heinrich Zschokke, and its title page says it was translated from the German by M. G. Lewis. The introduction says Matthew Gregory Lewis professed to have translated this romance out of the German, and that he was born in 1775 of a wealthy family. A man says "better to play the beggar in Venice than the villain in Naples." A concealed villain springs upon a stranger with a gleaming poniard, but is felled to the earth by the arm of the mendicant.
A paper signed by the Venetian Bravo, Abellino, tells those who seek him with the design of delivering him up to the law to despair and tremble. The Doge, described as incensed on reading the paper, exclaims about a hundred sequins to him who discovers Abellino and a thousand to him who delivers him up to justice.
