About this book

Promises, family authority and wounded pride shape Walter Scott's historical novel of Scotland. Published in 1819, The Bride of Lammermoor brings love and arranged marriage into a world where family standing and political loyalties carry weight. Scott's introduction recounts the older Scottish family story behind the novel, including a secret pledge and a mother who presses her daughter toward another match. That account gives the fiction a troubling context of private feeling constrained by public expectations.

The dialogue brings those pressures into sharp focus. Captain Craigengelt delivers a challenge on behalf of Bucklaw to the Master of Ravenswood, turning a dispute over hospitality into a test of honour. Ravenswood questions both the message and its messenger. Readers interested in historical romance will find a study of how pride, obligation and family influence make personal choices difficult.
