About this book

The Invaders, and Other Stories lists in its contents The Invaders, The Wood-Cutting Expedition, An Old Acquaintance, Lost on the Steppe; or, the Snowstorm, Polikushka and Kholstomír. A section headed A Volunteer's Narrative has Captain Khlopof, in epaulets and cap, enter the narrator's earth-hut on the 24th of July and say that to-morrow our battalion is to move.

A lieutenant leaps from his horse and hastens into a house that is all in flames on one side, and comes out with singed hair and burned sleeves, carrying two doves rescued from the flames. A travelling account says that as the storm and cold increased the horses grew weak and the road became worse, and the travellers did not know where they were or where they were going, while the bells jingled so merrily and carelessly. A speaker recalls how they would drive up and down, occasionally stopping, and were always kept waiting, sometimes for three hours at the door.
