About this book
The Chorus Girl and Other Stories by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov is Volume 8 of The Tales of Chekhov, translated by Constance Garnett. The contents list names The Chorus Girl, Verotchka, My Life at a Country House, Rothschild's Fiddle, Zinotchka and A Trivial Incident.
In the piece headed THE CHORUS GIRL, Nikolay Petrovitch Kolpakov, her adorer, sits in the outer room of her summer villa, ill-humoured and out of sorts after dining and drinking a whole bottle of inferior port. Ognev thinks "Nothing in life is so precious as people!" as he strides along the avenue to the gate, and meets Kuznetsov's daughter Vera, a girl of one-and-twenty. Vanda remembered a dentist, called Finkel, who six months ago had given her a bracelet, and she thinks "He'll be sure to give it me, if only I find him at home."
