About this book

The Party and Other Stories by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov is Volume 4 of The Tales of Chekhov, translated by Constance Garnett. The contents list names The Party, Terror, A Woman's Kingdom, A Problem, The Kiss, Anna on the Neck, The Teacher of Literature, Typhus and A Misfortune.

In the piece headed THE PARTY, Olga Mihalovna, whose husband's name-day was being celebrated, goes out into the garden after the festive dinner with its eight courses and its endless conversation. Sasha wonders what he has done wrong besides discounting a forged note, and reasons that using another person's signature was considered reprehensible, but still not a crime but a generally accepted dodge. Sofya Petrovna turns towards the embankment with a burning face, and a goods train passes whose trucks file by in a long string like the days of a man's life.
