About this book
After a hot night, a morning swim brings Laevsky into conversation with Samoylenko, an army doctor known for helping his neighbours. Laevsky admits that his feelings for Nadyezhda Fyodorovna have changed. The life of work and shared ideals he imagined in the Caucasus has given way to boredom and regret. As he searches for explanations in books and theories, Samoylenko answers with a practical concern for patience and responsibility.
The title story follows this uneasy social circle into a dispute involving Laevsky and the zoologist Von Koren. Calls for reconciliation compete with wounded pride, while uncertainty about the rules makes the preparations for a duel awkwardly comic. Constance Garnett's English translation places this story alongside Excellent People, Neighbours, At Home and others. Readers interested in Russian short fiction will find the title story's conversations exposing the strain between declared principles, personal desires and obligations to other people.
