About this book

This volume is Volume 9 of Tales of Chekhov. Its contents list stories including The Schoolmistress, Misery, A Lady's Story, The Bet and The Shoemaker and the Devil.

The Schoolmistress opens on a drive out of town on a warm April day, with snow still lying in the ditches. Marya Vassilyevna rides with Semyon, who repeats gossip that officials pocketed money meant for a new school; she answers that the school cost only a thousand and that it is wrong to slander people. The passage adds that the peasants think she is paid too much, twenty-one roubles a month. In another story a turner on a sledge in the snow thinks "To live over again," remembering his wife Matryona and the forty years that passed after their wedding.
