About this book
The Devil’s Disciple, by George Bernard Shaw, is divided into ACT I, ACT II and ACT III. A stage direction places Mrs. Dudgeon, of New Hampshire, sitting up in the kitchen and general dwelling room of her farm house on the outskirts of the town of Websterbridge in the year 1777. The stage direction says Mrs. Dudgeon’s face, even at its best, is grimly trenched by the channels into which the barren forms and observances of a dead Puritanism can pen a bitter temper and a fierce pride.
Mrs. Dudgeon, raising her voice, says that people who fear God don’t fear to give the devil’s work its right name. Essie, wailing, asks what they will do to him and whether they will hang him. The text says that Unionists who were detached from their parties were called renegades, as Burgoyne was.
