About this book

The book is titled St. Peter, His Name and His Office, as Set Forth in Holy Scripture. The preface says the present work took its rise, and is largely drawn, from the very learned Father Passaglia's Commentary on the Prerogatives of St. Peter, Prince of the Apostles, which was published in Latin, in 1850. A dedication is addressed to Peter, Prince of the Apostles, the Rock of the Church.

The text says two conceptions run through every illustration and are involved in its primary idea, and names them as Unity and Visibility. The text says the Church is proclaimed to be the Kingdom of God and the Kingdom of Heaven. The text names the continual exercise of judicial and legislative power, and diligent inspection, and says there is not one of these which Peter did not exercise, in a manner to indicate the ruler set over all. The text asks whether we are to refuse to the Fathers, and ancient doctors of the Church the deference which we allow to Rabbins and Thalmudists.
