About this book
The Follies of Love is by Jean-François Regnard. The character list names Albert, Worthy, Arabella, Jenny and Scratch, and Act I is set outside a country house at the end of the 17th century. Jenny describes the master she serves as jealous, stupid, brutal to the extreme, miserly, hard and peevish.
Arabella says that, dressed like a man, a knight errant, she will free herself from Albert and his harsh tyranny, and that she is going to run away and seek adventures. Albert says he intends to rule the roost and not follow the manners of these times. Scratch says that if he only had a subject in whom he could make the spirit of madness enter, he could quite answer for it, and Albert says Jenny is a perfect subject.
