About this book
The title page reads The Forest Schoolmaster by Peter Rosegger, with an authorized translation by Frances E. Skinner. The preface says its author was born in Steiermark, Austria, in a lonely mountain region, and led the life of a forest peasant until he reached the age of eighteen, when he became apprenticed to a travelling peasant tailor. A charcoal-burner repeats what Wurzentoni says: that the old schoolmaster knew a bit more than other people; a good bit more.
A charcoal-burner's talk has it that the schoolmaster has bewitched himself and, invisible, wanders around day and night in Winkelsteg. The speaker meets Aga, panting under a load of grass; she is gathering fodder for her goats, and the child is her little daughter. The speaker says Berthold, seeing the Edelweiss on the speaker's breast, says with a warning gesture that it is a dangerous weed.
