About this book
The Fourteenth of July, and Danton, subtitled Two Plays of the French Revolution, is by Romain Rolland, in an authorized translation with a preface by Barrett H. Clark. The contents list Romain Rolland and the People's Theater, The Fourteenth of July (Le 14 Juillet) and Danton. The essay headed Romain Rolland and the People's Theater says it is perhaps a little surprising to learn that the author of Jean-Christophe has written at least sixteen full-length plays.
The essay says the author has drawn characters including Hoche, Desmoulins, Danton and Robespierre, among others. De Launey says that the King confided the Bastille to him and that he shall never surrender; the Pensioners seize him, and he struggles, crying Traitors and Cowards as they carry him off. A judge tells Philippeaux to address the court and not the people, and Philippeaux replies that the people are our sole judges and that you are nothing without them.
