About this book

A suspicious set of spaceship plans gives Special Corps agent Jim diGriz a way out of the records room. What looks like a bulky commercial vessel closely matches a warship design from a thousand years earlier. After waking his impatient chief, Inskipp, with the discovery, diGriz heads for Cittanuvo to learn why an apparently prosperous planet is building such a dangerous ship.

Harry Harrison tells this science fiction adventure through an agent whose criminal experience helps him recognize deception. DiGriz's running commentary turns an urgent investigation into a contest of nerve, wit and professional pride. Paperwork, forged identities and messages carried across space by thought all have a part in the case. Readers who enjoy mysteries with technological puzzles will find a story in which checking old files can uncover a threat on a galactic scale, while quarrels with the boss keep the tone brisk and comic.
