About this book

A roadside card player interrupts the usual riding and hunting of King Connal's eldest son. The prince wins two wagers, bringing enchanted cattle to a castle field and a bear to the queen's supper room. His third game ends differently: the stranger demands that he find the stranger's dwelling and take three hairs from his beard within a year and a day. These bargains give Padraic Colum's tale a pattern of repeated encounters, magical rewards and mounting danger.

Published in 1916, the book combines prose storytelling with songs and draws on the fairy tales and folklore of Ireland. Another passage follows Sheen, whose encounter with wild stallions leads to a rescue by the Hunter-King after she falls into a river. Later, she keeps watch beside his body, spinning thread as candles burn around her. The sudden darkness turns this household scene uncanny. Readers can explore a world where royal concerns, simple tasks and supernatural events belong to the same story.
