About this book
The book concerns the origin, construction and civilization of ancient lake habitations in Ireland, using their remains and the antiquities found in and around them. The title identifies these ancient lacustrine habitations as crannogs, while the frontispiece presents an isolated lake dwelling ideally restored from inspection of numerous sites. The discussion of antiquity asks readers to picture the aspect of the country some thousands of years ago, treating that retrospect as comparatively short.
The account of fishing implements describes a highly finished fish-spear head whose barbs were evidently intended to hold whatever substance they struck. The fish-spear description gives the tang as solid and octangular, with three rather deep transverse notches where the tang joins the head.
