About this book

The Live Corpse is a play in six acts. The characters include Theodore Vasílyevich Protásov, called Fédya, and Elisabeth Andréyevna Protásova, called Lisa, who is his wife, with Mísha, their son. Other characters are Anna Pávlovna, Lisa's mother, Sásha, Lisa's younger, unmarried sister, and Másha, a gipsy girl.

In one scene Sásha says Lisa can't love another, and Anna Pávlovna asks why not, when she's free. A character named Fédya says he was a bad husband and that he considers her perfectly free. Prince Abrézkov asks a young lawyer how the case stands and is told that the Counsel are speaking and Petrúshin is addressing the Court.
