About this book

The title page reads Tolstoi for the Young, select tales from Tolstoi, translated from the Russian by Mrs. R. S. Townsend. The contents list names, among others, Ivan the Fool, Where there is Love, there is God also and A Prisoner. Ivan raises his hand to dash a Devilkin's head against the plough, but the Devilkin squeals that it will do whatever he wants if he does not kill it.

The text says Jilin wrote the letter but did not address it correctly, so that it should not reach home. The text says that Jilin and his comrade lived for a month, and that their master was always cheerful but fed them badly. The godson goes to the river, fills his mouth with water and waters one piece of charcoal, going again and again until he has watered the other two.
