About this book

The Log School-House on the Columbia is a tale of the pioneers of the great Northwest. The preface recalls a librarian's suggestion that the author write a story giving a view of the lives of pioneers in Oregon and Washington. Gretchen asks about a strange object across the limbs of trees and is told that the object is a grave.

The school-house stands on river bluffs under gigantic evergreens, with a frame of pine and a pine desk and benches. Benjamin's expedition to the Falls of the Missouri leads him to want more trips with the schoolmaster, to whom he becomes increasingly attached.
