About this book

The Zigzag Club makes the Rhine the subject of its winter evening study, linking riverside places with stories from the past. Hezekiah Butterworth builds this book for young readers around an imagined tour, using travel scenes to introduce German history, literature, art and folklore. Its planned summer route includes Holland, Germany, Denmark, Norway and Sweden, carrying the club's interests toward the countries of the North Sea.

Castles, vineyards and towns give these lessons a visible setting. At Bingen, Willie Clifton recalls a familiar poem, while a passage near the Mouse Tower introduces the legend of Bishop Hatto. The narrator also explains the difference between that tale and the tower's history. Readers interested in older methods of teaching children can see how poems, local legends and descriptions of scenery work together to encourage historical curiosity.
