About this book

Rumors of a royal escape throw the mountain capital of Lustadt into turmoil. For ten years, Peter of Blentz has governed Lutha as regent while his nephew, King Leopold, has been confined at Blentz. Higher taxes and corrupt officials have made Peter unpopular, and the news of Leopold's flight threatens his hold on power. Into this unsettled country drives Barney Custer of Nebraska, visiting the land where his mother grew up. A shopkeeper's advice about his beard hints at a dangerous resemblance.

Edgar Rice Burroughs builds this adventure novel around mistaken identity, royal authority and swift changes of fortune. Mountain roads, a forest and an inn provide settings for pursuit and narrow escapes. In one tense episode, Barney takes papers from a room of sleeping conspirators, then must flee through a window when they wake. Readers who enjoy political intrigue with physical action will find both in the struggle surrounding Lutha's throne.
