About this book

An iron hammer and a sack are the unusual equipment of Makoma, the powerful child whose adventures open this collection. Born beside the Zambesi at Senna, he sets out to become a hero and encounters giants who shape mountains, riverbeds and forests. Andrew Lang's 1906 volume gathers fairy tales from many countries, with an opening preface that explains how the narratives were adapted for children and given lively conversations.

Magic also enters the ordinary business of meals and shelter. In the middle excerpt, Jack possesses a table that supplies splendid dinners, while a bag and a cornet provide other remarkable powers. A king's interest in the table brings these gifts into conflict with royal authority. The contents range from animal tricksters to enchanted objects and giant adversaries. Readers can enjoy individual stories while noticing the recurring roles of courage, kindness and cunning that Lang discusses in his preface.

About the author

Andrew Lang

The Blue Fairy Book of 1889 did well enough for Longmans, Green to keep the series running for a quarter of a century, and Andrew Lang put his name to twenty-five volumes, The Yellow Fairy Book among them in 1894. Much of the labour was his wife's.
