About this book

Old Lapussa keeps his household in weary silence, using the threat of an altered will to maintain his authority. Relatives and dependants sit around him, including young Henrietta, whose smallest movements attract criticism. Her governess responds to his complaints by finding fault with her sewing. This tense domestic opening gives Mór Jókai's novel a sharp interest in money, family power and the limits placed on personal choice.

The story also moves into aristocratic gatherings at Arad, where the countess seeks out acquaintances who might enliven her social circle. Gossip about Szilard Vamhidy centres on his past attachment to Henrietta. Meanwhile, the mysterious bandit Fatia Negra brings danger to a world of wealth and fashionable company. Readers can expect household quarrels, social intrigue and adventure, with detailed portraits of people whose comfortable surroundings offer little peace.
