About this book
The Religious Spirit of the Slavs is a set of three lectures given in Lent, 1916, by a priest of the Serbian Church who was professor of theology in the University of Belgrade. The text has Tolstoi saying that his understanding is against the traditions of the Holy Synod, and the Holy Synod answering that its traditions are against his understandings. The text says Tolstoi was much troubled by the suffering of men, and that he believed men can be made happy in this life.
The text argues that the Council of Constance was a great innovator, and that Huss stood for the true catholicity of old. The text says "Your sins are my sins, my sins are your sins." The text says that Tolstoi had a conception of the Christian religion in common with Dostojevsky and Gogol, and with the Holy Synod.
