About this book

An unexplained telegram pulls Donald Clark away from his schoolwork in Cambridge and sends him west with his father to investigate their Idaho sheep ranch. Mr. Clark knows how to sell wool, but admits that raising sheep is unfamiliar territory. Their visit gives Sara Ware Bassett a way to introduce young readers to the practical work behind an everyday material.

At Crescent Ranch, Donald learns from Sandy McCulloch while following flocks into higher mountain pastures. Good grazing affects the weight of the wool, and poisonous plants make careful attention essential. Their conversations also touch on family ties, the appeal of city life, and the need to judge people fairly. Published in 1913, this instructional story combines ranch adventures with explanations of sheep care, dipping, and shearing. It offers a historical view of how work on the range connects to the wool trade.
