About this book

Carl and the Cotton Gin is a book by Sara Ware Bassett. The contents list chapters called The McGregors, Carl Tells a Story and The Romance of Cotton. Julie declares to every person she meets that it was Mrs. McGregor who saved Joey.

Neighbors in Mulberry Court come to Mrs. McGregor, who prescribes medicines, gives advice and suggests plain, common-sense remedies for every variety of dilemma. A speaker explains that a fair-sized factory in a busy district will have half-a-dozen gins or more, and that one gin will clean from three hundred to three hundred and fifty pounds of cotton an hour. Mary recognizes cottonseed oil as an old friend. A speaker tells Carl to put some kettles of water on the stove to heat and says that the boys must be scrubbed whether the rest are or not.
