About this book

A pool of muddy water near Plymouth Docks becomes a building site for young Tommy Potter, who tries to copy the Eddystone lighthouse with a pile of bricks. His father John, a stone cutter who helped Henry Winstanley build on the offshore reef, recognises the boy's interest in engineering. R. M. Ballantyne uses this family scene to introduce a children's historical adventure about the effort to keep a light burning above dangerous waters.

The narrative combines lively dialogue with accounts of lighthouse construction and the demands of service at sea. Winstanley's bold design, the exposed rock and the later tower built by Rudyerd give the story its practical focus. Life inside the lighthouse brings isolation, difficult weather and responsibility for passing ships. Readers interested in coastal history or early engineering will find a story that connects large building projects with the families and workers behind them.
