About this book

A school newspaper promises Paul Cameron a way to leave a mark on Burmingham High, but putting words into print soon becomes a matter of money, equipment and responsibility. As president of the class of 1920, he imagines a monthly filled with sporting news, student writing and school activities. His father urges him to investigate subscriptions and printing costs before buying a press, while his friend Melville Carter questions whether classmates will pay for news they already know.

Sara Ware Bassett builds this children's novel around the practical work behind the March Hare. Paul takes on household jobs to earn money for a typewriter, and the paper's careful budgeting faces a test when its bank balance fails to match its accounts. The story gives young readers a concrete view of publishing as a shared undertaking, with enthusiasm, friendship and financial judgment all needed to turn an idea into a regular publication.
