About this book
Anne of Geierstein, or The Maiden of the Mist, Volume 1, is by Walter Scott. The volume is given with an introductory essay and notes by Andrew Lang.
A quoted account says the members of the 'Holy Vehme' became extremely numerous, and that in the fourteenth century the league contained upwards of one hundred thousand members. The supreme government of the Vehmic tribunals was vested in the great or general Chapter, composed of the Freegraves and all the other initiated members, high and low, according to the quoted words. A young man whose richly embroidered dress of azure blue gave him an air of authority says, "most welcome is he, if he brings with him a heart and a hand to serve our noble task." The inhabitants, in memory of the founder, had given a chapel the title of Hans-Kapelle.
