About this book

The Thirty Years War carries the heading History of the Thirty Years’ War in Germany, in a volume headed The Works of Friedrich Schiller and translated from the German. The preface to the sixth edition calls the present the best collected edition of the important works of Schiller accessible to readers in the English language.

The text asks whether, now that the church had divided and the Diet had broken into two religious parties, the whole system of the Empire was still exclusively to follow the one. The text states that to this day no Protestant prince has been raised to the imperial throne. The text says the Count of Hanau gladly placed himself under the milder yoke of the King of Sweden. Banner is said to have offered the Imperialists battle near Saalfeld, but their leader, Piccolomini, prudently declined an engagement, having chosen too strong a position to be forced.

Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805) was a German poet, playwright, and historian, and with Goethe a founder of Weimar classicism. His dramas of freedom and moral struggle, and his Ode to Joy set to music by Beethoven, made him one of the most beloved writers in the German language.
