The preface to the sixth edition says the present is the best collected edition of the important works of Schiller which is accessible to readers in the English language. Book I says that from the beginning of the religious wars in Germany to the peace of Munster, scarcely anything great or remarkable occurred in the political world of Europe in which the Reformation had not an important share. The text says the House of Austria directed, almost exclusively, the whole of its immense political power against the reformed doctrine and its adherents.

A summary list of headings names, among others, the Celebrated Retreat of Banner in Pomerania, Torstensohn taking the command and the Conquest of New Prague by Koenigsmark. The text says those in the south, detached from each other and surrounded on all sides by Roman Catholic states, were exposed to every inroad. The text says the Union were diligent in propagating a rumour that the preparations of the League had for their object to deprive them of the ecclesiastical foundations they had secularized.

Friedrich Schiller

Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805) was a German poet, playwright, and historian, and with Goethe a founder of Weimar classicism. His dramas of freedom and moral struggle, and his Ode to Joy set to music by Beethoven, made him one of the most beloved writers in the German language.
